Canmore and the surrounding area is an outdoor adventure paradise! While the Rocky Mountains, the foothills and the Bow River provide the setting, it is a group of passionate, independent small adventure tourism operators that are providing the magic – the unforgettable Alberta experiences. This group has formed a unique collective: the Adventure Hub. I was delighted to have my new Nordic walking business accepted into the Adventure Hub in 2018. It was evident right from my first meeting that I was joining a group of people with so much enthusiasm for their adventure experiences . They are driven by a desire to provide nothing less than outstanding experiences to visitors from near and far. There is also a synergy in working together to promote our adventure services and a convenience for our visitors in providing one-stop shopping via the Adventure Hub for an extensive array of activities including:
• Geology lessons
• Stand-up paddle boarding
• Dog sledding
• Mountain biking/cycling
• Distillery tours
• Horseback riding
• Exploring back country roads
• Mysterious self-guided tour of Canmore/Calgary/elsewhere
• Nordic walking
I have had the opportunity to sample some of the Adventure Hub experiences myself. Mystery Towns uses a smart phone app to provide you with clues and puzzles as you work your way around town at either a leisurely pace to maximize discovery or as a race against friends or the leader board. I had so much fun completing Smuggler’s Blues with local friends & we definitely learned things we did not know about Canmore. Indeed, you can now book this Mystery Town Tour at half price when you book a Nordic walking quick-start clinic with me!
We travelled to the scenic foothills country just west of Sundre to go white water rafting with Mukwah Rafting. It was an absolutely delightful experience. The Mukwah team were engaging, entertaining, energetic and just plain fun to be with on the water: Dunkin’ Duncan, Vivacious Viva, Yummy Jan and Crazy Cody! What a blast. Safety was paramount. The class 2 & 3 rapids were a thrill without being scary. Cliff jumping into the rapids was an exciting option. “I did it, I did it!” The scenery was great. The lunch was wholesome and filling. Gosh, even the outhouses get a 5 star rating for cleanliness and smelling wonderfully piney. A bonus for us was exploring the area nearby Mukwah, with the opportunity to see & photograph a beautiful herd of wild horses and hike without seeing a soul for hours in the stunning Ya Ha Tinda region. My only regret was not realizing that Mukwah also had lovely river-side campsites as well. A sister company offers a float down the Bow through Calgary as a very unique way to view the city. Canmore Raft Tours offers a fabulously scenic float trip starting right from the heart of Canmore. It cuts right through prime wildlife viewing habitat and although never guaranteed, the possibility is there to view bears, coyotes, elk, deer, eagles and other wildlife.
AUG 14th, 2019 UPDATE: Last Friday, I journeyed down the Bow River from Canmore with Canmore Raft Tours on the 2.5 Hour evening Explorer tour. Despite the smoky skies which created an eerie yet beautiful light on the river and made the mountains appear ghost-like, this tour was fantastic!
There was so much to see and we spotted bald eagles, osprey and beaver while on the river. On the drive back to Canmore I spotted elk and deer. Our guide was enthusiastic, informative and friendly. I really enjoyed the chance to chat and joke with the six other guests who were from Iowa and Ontario.
Gabrielle Abernethy is a geologist and naturalist. She loves the Rocky Mountains and all the adventure and wonder it offers. She started Earth & Pine Outdoor Inc. with the idea to satisfy the geological curiosity of visitors to the mountain parks and create meaningful connections to the landscape. I learned so much on this tour while completing a rewarding 4 hour hike. Gabrielle brings geology to life in a way books and classrooms could never do!
To wrap up, as the Adventure Hub website states: “adventure can be indoors, outdoors; fast-paced or slow-moving; adrenalin-based or a taste sensation. As we define it, adventure is simply a discovery that leaves a mark on you, a lasting impression. “ What ever is your adventure style, be sure to allow enough time in your visit to include a variety of Adventure Hub experiences. Do not hesitate to contact me if you would like more information on any of them. I would be more than happy to assist you!
