Nordic Walking, Walking & Hiking Experiences in the Rockies

Active by Nature is located in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, in the spectacular mountain town of Canmore, Alberta.  Formed in 2007 by sole proprietor, Mandy Johnson, Active by Nature offers  NORDIC WALKING, WALKING & HIKING TOURS.

NORDIC WALKING: Nordic Walking mimics cross-country skiing, but without the skis! It TURBO CHARGES walking, turning into a total body workout that utilizes virtually every muscle in your body in a gentle yet effective way. It promotes good posture, burns MEGA CALORIES, provides exceptional stability on all sorts of terrain, and off-loads stress from the lower body.

Whether you are super fit or just embarking on a fitness program, Nordic Walking is a perfect physical activity choice.  Active by Nature exclusively uses Urban Poles for fitness walking and ACTIVATOR™  poles for older adults, persons with mobility issues, and persons recovering from injury.  Ergonomically designed and strapless for safety, these poles are the best Nordic Walking equipment in Canada and endorsed by health practitioners across the country.

Active by Nature offers 1.5 & 2 hour Nordic walking tours in Canmore.  Can there be any place better in the world to go Nordic walking?

WALKING TOURS: Canmore's network of recreational trails is a walker's paradise! There are over 160 kilometres of trails within the town boundaries, many of them multi-use paved or gravel trails, along with hiking & biking trails.  But with limited time, most visitors are at a loss as to where to start.  A guided, interpretive walking tour is an ideal way to experience the world's favourite form of physical activity and learn all about this awesome mountain town!  Canmore is also a photographer's paradise. Custom photography walks are also offered, with a minimum group of four.

GUIDED HIKES: Kananaskis Country is 4,000 sq kilometres of sprawling wilderness bordering Banff National Park and Canmore. This unspoiled, untamed landscape is equally as spectacular as neighbouring Banff, with a fraction of the visitors. Active by Nature leads guided hikes in K-Country. These hikes are offered year-round. In the winter some of the outings make use of ice cleats (provided) while others turn into snowshoe hikes.

What a great experience!!  Urban Poling was amazing. I could feel it in my arms, my back and my upper body. Walking was an exercise I definitely needed but was not getting. It gave me stability and confidence...  I am so grateful that I received these (Urban Poles) as a Father's day gift...the best gift ever!

Today I went on The Photography Walk that Mandy put together and it was AMAZING! Mandy is a fantastic guide/host who freely and willingly shares her favourite spots to get great shots and provides necessary equipment, poles etc to get through some of the rougher terrain. Don't hesitate to book any of the hiking/walking tours she provides, you won't be disappointed. I look forward to our next encounter and sharing some pics. Awesome Mandy, thank you so much!

Amazing workout! We used muscles we didn't know we had. We went in Canmore with Mandy and it was awesome. She's very knowledgeable about Nordic walking, and the area in general. Must try! 😀

Today we were snowshoeing around High Rockies Trail. Over casted and blustery at times, we were still awestruck by the mountains and creeks. Thank you Mandy for being an awesome guide. Highly recommend connecting with Mandy if you want to explore area around Canmore. Great day to start the New Year! 🗻

It's been several days since my first poling walk with Mandy and one of my best buddies, but I am still reaping the benefits....The hike was transformative! I walked for 1.5 hours without joints talking to me, and walking down even a short flight of stairs was virtually painless - it's been years! Mandy was gentle and patient in teaching us the correct poling technique. She purposefully chose a variety of easy terrains to round out our first experience. She was helpful with her suggestions, and flexible with our abilities. We were so impressed that we set up our next hike immediately following our first one! Mandy's follow up with our wide assortment of questions has been timely and encouraging. Let's keep on rolling and keep on poling! 🙂

Mandy was so fun in teaching us about the fun of Nordic Poling and the benefits were a great bonus. Have given Mandy great reviews to our lodge in Kananaskis & I think it would be a great added activity. The scenery and the trails here would be perfect! I hope it happens. We’d do Mandy’s tour again.

Mandy helped my wife and I to get started with Nordic walking by providing us one hour basic training. She also helped us understand the right ways to use the poles, without injury, and equipped us with a set of poles each. Mandy is very knowledgeable about the trails and other scenic experiences in Canmore. We will likely use her services again in the future.
